New Paltz Celebrates Women for International Women's Day!

The New Paltz International Women's Day crowd at Water Street Market

The International Women's Day March attracted over 200 women and their allies in New Paltz on Saturday, March 9. After hearing brief remarks from co-sponsoring groups, the crowd marched down Main Street to the Water Street Market and back.

It was led by the great Tin Horn Uprising brass band and striking puppets from the Redwing Blackbird Theater. The action was sponsored by New Paltz Women in Black; a group that has been standing for peace and justice in front of the Elting Library every Saturday for over 17 years! Co-sponsors included students from SUNY New Paltz and Roundout Valley High School, local Indivisibles, immigrant and racial justice groups reproductive rights activists and union and feminist organizations (a complete list is below).

The spirited and upbeat event celebrated the achievements, strength, resilience and courage of women, but it was also a call to action; for full equality and for an end to violence against women and for the eradication of racism, sexism, anti-LGBTQ bigotry and discrimination against immigrants and all vulnerable and marginalized members of society.
